Alpacas and their wonderful fiber started us on this incredible journey. We have about 50 alpacas and more on the way in June.

Now that it’s winter, they rely on us for their total nutrition so we are growing fodder (hydroponic barley grass) plus giving them alfalfa pellets and hay. They still wander around the pastures nibbling–not sure on what since everything’s stopped growing!

Monthly weights and careful observation during feeding allow us to know when there’s a problem brewing although the alpacas are very stoic and often don’t show signs of being sick. Maybe it’s because they’re a prey animal and showing weakness in the wild would make them vulnerable to attack by preditors.

Shearing day is set for April 15th this year. Come back closer to the date for more specifics. Or better yet, sign up for the newsletter and you’ll be in the know.
